Overcoming Barriers Together: Bridging the Gap Between Fear and Understanding
We’ve worked with our client, Marta*, for years, but when she contacted us in June 2024, she was desperate for help. She is Spanish speaking only and when she received a letter in English about her mortgage that she didn’t understand, panic set in.
Her mortgage bill had increased to an amount she could no longer afford and she didn’t know how or why. She was afraid her only option would be to sell her home, which would displace her family, including her husband and three children, one of whom is disabled.
This is where we were able to step in to help. Our financial counselor took the time to translate the letter, helping Marta to understand what was going on and ease her fears. Together, we identified the issue and mapped out a plan to fix it with the bank. From there, we worked alongside Marta to contact the bank, fill out the necessary paperwork, and successfully work out a loan modification. By the end of the process, Marta’s mortgage payment was back to a level she could afford, and her family’s home was safe.
For families like Marta’s, a little extra support can make all the difference. Having someone to guide them, explain the details, and take the stress off their shoulders can turn what feels like an impossible situation into a manageable one.
We also know that language barriers can quickly turn financial challenges into an overwhelming crisis -- that’s why we’re proud to be a trusted resource for the Hispanic community of Connecticut. Our financial counselors go above and beyond to help every individual they meet have fair and safe housing, no matter what part of the process or life circumstances a client is facing.
